For the month of May 2019, BigDataSG meetup brings Carlos Queiroz, DBS, Head Data Platform (Technology) who will share their journey towards building a modern data stack with independent scaling of data storage and compute to make data-driven decisions at DBS. The session will also feature a quick technical overview of Alluxio, open source data orchestration that brings data closer to compute, as well as a panel moderated by me.

Agenda:
6pm : Networking time
6:30pm: Redefining the data analytics stack at DBS for compute and storage independence
7.30pm: Break
8.00pm: Panel Discussion: "Undertaking Large Data Platform Transformations - DBS Story "
8.20pm: Q&A
8.45pm: Wrap up

Venue: Accenture Digital Hub, Level 31, 250 North Bridge Road, Singapore 179101

Talk: Redefining the data analytics stack at DBS for compute and storage independence

The rise of computation-intensive workloads and the adoption of the cloud has driven organizations to adopt a decoupled architecture for modern workloads -- one in which compute scales independently from storage. In addition, the simplicity and cost efficiency of object stores, has lead to enterprises broadening its use for big data workloads. However, scaling in a disaggregated manner particularly with object stores, introduces new problems. In this session, Carlos Queiroz presents the steps DBS took towards a new approach to making data-intensive compute independent of the storage. He will share the challenges as well as the new technology stack that includes technologies like Spark, Alluxio and object stores.

In addition, Aseem Rastogi will present a technical overview of Alluxio - open source data orchestration for big data and machine learning in the cloud. It brings data closer to compute frameworks like Spark, Presto, Hive and TensorFlow and enables faster performance with data locality, easy access to data with support for popular APIs and more elastic data-driven workloads with a global namespace.
